About Wynot
Wynot is a village of 216 on a short spur off NE 12 in northeastern Cedar County, about 13 miles northeast of Hartington and a few miles from the Missouri River. It has K–12 Wynot Public Schools, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Donnas Diner, J&H Storage Campground and the Sportsman's Steakhouse, Lounge & RV Park.
History
Wynot grew up when the Omaha Road built its line through northern Cedar County. The railroad ended its track about a mile west of St. James, across Bow Creek, and the businesses and people of St. James moved to the new town; the Wynot post office opened on December 16, 1907. By local tradition the name comes from an old German settler's habitual answer, "Why not?"
The Presbyterian church built at St. James in 1899 was moved to Wynot in 1908. On July 24, 1863, the five children of Henson and Phoebe Wiseman were killed at their homestead east of St. James; they are buried in the Wynot cemetery, and a monument stands at the homestead site. The population peaked at 416 in 1940.
