About Hartington

Hartington is the county seat of Cedar County, a city of 1,517 where NE 57 and NE 84 meet near the middle of the county. It has public and Catholic schools, the Avera Hartington clinic, the Hotel Hartington and Cobblestone Inn & Suites, a city campground and golf course, and it hosts the Cedar County Fair every July.

History

The Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway (the "Omaha Road") laid out Hartington in 1883 at the end of its branch from Wakefield and named it for Lord Hartington, the British statesman. The post office of nearby Paragon moved to the new town and took the Hartington name on October 17, 1883. The depot, rebuilt in 1925 after a fire, still stands at 408 N. Broadway; the last train ran in July 1973.

Less than a year after it incorporated, Hartington won the county seat from St. Helena in an election on January 20, 1885. The Romanesque Revival courthouse was built in 1891–92 for $19,000. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, as are the 1921–23 City Hall and Auditorium, the 1915 Carnegie library, the 1917 Hotel Hartington and the downtown historic district. Governors Dwight Burney and Charles Thone both graduated from Hartington High School. The population peaked at 1,730 in 1980.
