About Fordyce

Fordyce is a village of 133 in northwestern Cedar County, about 2 miles south of NE 12 on Spur S-14A and a few miles east of US 81. It has St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Boondocks restaurant and the village office; Hartington is about 10 miles southeast by county roads.

History

Fordyce was founded in 1907 when the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway was extended through northern Cedar County, and named for a longtime railroad dispatcher. The post office opened on March 26, 1907, and the first bank was chartered the same year. By 1910 the town had a bank, hotel, saloon, stores, a lumberyard, two grain elevators and a pool hall.

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church was blessed on February 18, 1909, and a two-room school was built that year. Fordyce incorporated on August 4, 1913, and celebrated its centennial in June 2013. The church is now part of All Saints Parish with St. Joseph at Constance and St. Boniface at Menominee.
