History
Herman took over from Cuming City, a territorial town founded in 1854 whose post office was renamed Herman in January 1872. The town was laid out in 1871 on the Omaha & Northwestern railroad and named for Samuel Herman, a conductor on the line; the rails reached it in 1872. By 1881 it had about 150 people, general stores, a hotel and a busy trade in hay, grain and livestock.
A tornado on June 13, 1899, destroyed the business district and killed 13 people; the town rebuilt, and for a time had the largest department store of any Nebraska town its size. The population peaked at 427 in 1940. The railroad was abandoned in 1980. Herman celebrated its 150th year in 2021, and Herman Days, with a parade and town-wide garage sale, is held in early to mid September.
