About Arlington

Arlington, with 1,300 people, is the most populous village in Nebraska. It lies on US 30 near the Elkhorn River in southwestern Washington County, about 8 miles east of Fremont. It has Arlington Public Schools, the Arlington Public Library and the Washington County Fairgrounds, home of the county fair each summer.

History

The Sioux City & Pacific Railroad laid out the town in 1869 as Bell Creek, after the creek and the Belle Creek post office of 1857. Because another Nebraska town had a similar name, it was renamed Arlington early in 1882 and incorporated on April 10, 1882. It later became a junction of Chicago & North Western lines to Missouri Valley and Omaha.

Brothers Chester C. and George A. Marshall, from Ohio, founded Marshall's Nurseries here in 1887; it grew to about 50 salesmen in seven states and developed the Marshall seedless green ash, once planted along streets across the Plains. George Marshall's house is on the National Register. An Atlas missile site east of town was shut down in the 1960s. The 2020 census count of 1,300 was the village's highest.
