About Loup City

Loup City is a city of 1,053 people (2020) and the seat of Sherman County, in the Middle Loup River valley at about 2,070 feet. NE 58 and NE 92 run together through town, NE 92 west toward Ansley and Broken Bow and east with NE 58 toward Ashton and St. Paul, and NE 10 ends here after coming north from Kearney through Hazard. Sherman Reservoir is about 5 miles northeast. Loup City has Loup City Public Schools, the Loup City–Sherman County Library, a medical clinic, a swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course and the county fairgrounds; the nearest hospital is in Ord. Loup City calls itself the Polish Capital of Nebraska. It is on Central Time.

History

William and M. W. Benschoter laid out and named Loup City in 1873, the year the county was organized, and Frank Ingram opened the first store that April and became the first postmaster; the Loup City News, later the Sherman County Times, began that November. The county’s first courthouse, finished in 1874, burned on the day the commissioners accepted it and was rebuilt on its walls in 1878; the present Beaux Arts courthouse was dedicated on October 8, 1921. Polish and German settlers filled the surrounding country, and St. Josaphat’s Catholic Church keeps early-1900s stained-glass windows given by area families, most of them with Polish names. On June 14, 1934, rumors of a strike at the Fairmont Creamery poultry plant brought Ella Reeve “Mother” Bloor and Communist organizers to a rally on the courthouse lawn that ended in a clash with townspeople, the Loup City riot. Loup City reached 1,675 people in 1940. Desert naturalist Edmund C. Jaeger (1887) and Time and New York Times correspondent Charles Mohr (1929) were born here.
