About Sherman County

Sherman County lies in central Nebraska, where the Middle Loup River crosses the county diagonally past Loup City and Sherman Reservoir spreads across the Oak Creek valley to the northeast. It has one city, Loup City, the county seat, and the villages of Litchfield, Ashton, Rockville and Hazard. It borders Valley County on the north, Greeley at the northeast corner, Howard on the east, Buffalo on the south and Custer on the west.

The Legislature created the county in 1871, and a party of settlers from Grand Island organized it in an election of April 1, 1873, with 13 votes cast, choosing the new town of Loup City as the seat. Polish and German settlers followed; in 2000 nearly 30 percent of residents claimed Polish ancestry, and Loup City calls itself the Polish Capital of Nebraska. The Union Pacific came up the Middle Loup to Rockville and Loup City and the Burlington to Litchfield, Hazard and Ashton in 1886–87. The county peaked at 9,122 people in 1930, later than most of central Nebraska. Sherman Dam, built by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1959–61, created the reservoir.
