History

When Logan County was organized in 1885, the town of Logan served as the temporary seat for about 50 days. In a special election on July 25, 1885, voters chose a site called Section 5 instead, and it was platted on November 22, 1885, as Gandy, for Jim (James P.) Gandy of Broken Bow, who offered his land and promised to bring in businessmen if the town carried his name. The county worked from a sod office at first; a two-story courthouse with a cupola followed in 1887–88. By 1890 Gandy had about 300 people, a Methodist church, Odd Fellows and G.A.R. lodges, two doctors, a druggist and two general stores, and Jas. P. Gandy was postmaster; the Logan County Pioneer began in 1885–86 and a bank in October 1886. Gandy incorporated in November 1911 to hold its place as county seat, but in 1912 the Union Pacific ended its new branch at Stapleton, and businesses, both banks and the Presbyterian church moved there. Stapleton won the seat in 1929, and the records left Gandy in February 1930. The census counted 194 people here in 1930.
