Stapleton was platted in 1912 when a Union Pacific Railroad branch was extended to the site — several businesses and a Presbyterian church physically relocated there from the older town of Gandy, and Stapleton took over as Logan County seat in 1913. The town was named for a man named Stapleton, a business associate of town-site promoter Harry O'Neill whose financial backing helped start the town.

Stapleton is an incorporated village and the Logan County seat, with a 2020 Census population of 267, down from 305 in 2010. Its ZIP code is 69163. The local economy rests on agriculture — ranching and farming above the Ogallala Aquifer, with the South Loup River supporting hay and grazing land. The village is home to Stapleton Public Schools and Augusta Winds Golf Course, and celebrated its centennial in 2012. Federal judge C. Arlen Beam, who served on the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is associated with the town.
