About Sutherland

Sutherland is a village of 1,313 people (2020), at its largest ever, in western Lincoln County at about 2,956 feet. US 30, the Lincoln Highway, runs through town beside the Union Pacific main line, I-80 passes just south, and NE 25 leads south past Sutherland Reservoir to Wallace. Sutherland has its own schools, a public library, a pool, a post office and the Fourth of July rodeo. Sutherland Reservoir State Recreation Area, about 3,000 surface acres, lies just south, with the nine-hole Oregon Trail Golf Course on its north shore. Sutherland is on Central Time.

History

Emigrants on the Oregon–California Trail passed here along the south bank of the South Platte, and the O’Fallon’s Bluff stage station stood on that stretch; in 1864 the Army dug a ditch and built stockade corrals there. The wagon ruts near the I-80 rest area east of town are among the best preserved on the trail and have been on the National Register since 1974. Sutherland itself was platted in 1891 after the Union Pacific had been built through, and it grew slowly as an irrigated farming town. The Sutherland State Aid Bridge over the North Platte, 4 miles north, is also on the National Register. Baseball outfielder Cliff Mapes was born here. The village has kept growing, from 1,129 people in 2000 to 1,313 in 2020.
