About Hamlet

Hamlet is a village of 27 people (2020) in southwestern Hayes County, on Frenchman Creek at 2,835 feet. Spur 43A runs a short way north from US 6 into the village; Wauneta is about 7 miles west-northwest and Palisade about 7 miles east-southeast, and the county seat, Hayes Center, is about 14 miles northeast. Hamlet shares the 69040 ZIP code with Palisade. It is on Central Time.

History

The settlement began as Hudson, which got a post office in 1890; it was renamed Hamlet in 1904 to avoid confusion with another Hudson in Nebraska. The Burlington branch up the Frenchman Valley reached Palisade in 1891 and Wauneta in 1892, and its tracks still pass the village. Hamlet had 220 people in 1940 and has grown smaller at nearly every census since. Two National Register properties near Hamlet, the J. M. Daniel House and the J. M. Daniel School (District No. 3), both listed in 1985, recall one of the area’s early settlers.
