About Palisade

Palisade is a village of 294 on Frenchman Creek in northern Hitchcock County; a small part lies in Hayes County. US 6 skirts the south edge of town, and NE 25A runs north through it toward Hayes Center. It shares ZIP 69040 with Hamlet.

History

Settlers came to the Frenchman valley about 1879, and the Palisade post office opened on February 25, 1880; the name, given by Samuel True, came from the bluffs along the creek, thought to look like a palisade. In 1890 the village had about 125 people and a flour mill under construction. The Burlington's branch up Frenchman Creek from Culbertson reached Palisade on December 22, 1891, and Imperial the next August; the track is still in place, leased to the Nebraska, Kansas & Colorado Railway.

The Women's Club started a library in 1917; since 1966 it has been in the old Palisade State Bank building. The village reached its largest population, 799, in 1940. From January 1944 to December 1945 German prisoners of war from the camp at Indianola lived in a side camp here and worked on area farms. Ralph A. Bohlmann (1932–2016), president of Concordia Seminary and of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod from 1981 to 1992, was born in Palisade.
