About Martinsburg

Martinsburg is a village of 78 on NE 9 in central Dixon County, about 8 miles south of Ponca and 7 miles north of Allen, where South Creek and Daily Creek meet. It has no post office of its own; addresses use Ponca or Allen. Bob's Bar & Grill, Trinity Lutheran Church and the village office are here.

History

Jonathan Martin came from Illinois in 1867, built a grist mill and store, and founded the town in 1872; it was laid out in 1874 and named for him. The post office opened as Justice in 1879 and was renamed Martinsburgh in 1881. Martinsburg came within about a dozen votes of becoming the county seat in 1875 and lost to Ponca again in 1884, 779 to 605.

Prairie fires nearly destroyed the town in March 1880, and Martinsburg never had a railroad. Bob Lamprecht opened Bob's Bar & Grill in 1977; it is known for its hand-formed burgers.
