Allen is a village in southern Dixon County, Nebraska, situated along NE-9 in the rolling agricultural landscape near the Wayne County border. Home to approximately 358 residents, Allen provides community services, a school district, and local businesses for the surrounding rural area.
Allen sits directly on Nebraska Highway 9, the north–south corridor linking Ponca and the Missouri River bluffs to the north with Emerson and West Point to the south. Nebraska Highway 35 crosses NE-9 about 17 miles southeast at Emerson, connecting Allen onward to Wayne and Wakefield. The village lies in the agricultural heartland of southern Dixon County, where corn, soybeans, and cattle shape the local economy.
History
Allen was established in 1890 when the railroad reached the site and was incorporated as a village in 1893. The village grew as a railroad shipping point and trade center for the surrounding farming community. Allen celebrated its Quasquicentennial (Q-125) in June 2016, marking 125 years since 1891. Early settlers of German and Scandinavian descent shaped the community's cultural character, and their legacy persists in the area's community institutions and local traditions.
The Allen Consolidated Schools served as an anchor institution for the community through much of the 20th century, and the district continues to provide education for Allen and nearby rural families. Agriculture remains the economic backbone of the Allen area.
