Description

Two markers for the Omaha leader Logan Fontenelle stand side by side at Petersburg Community Park, on Front Street (NE 14) just north of 10th Street in Petersburg. State marker No. 205, erected by the Petersburg Commercial Club and the Nebraska State Historical Society, tells how Fontenelle, born at Bellevue in 1825 to fur trader Lucien Fontenelle and a daughter of Omaha chief Big Elk, served as interpreter at the 1854 treaty in Washington and was killed by a Sioux war party on an Omaha buffalo hunt near here in July 1855. The second marker was placed by the Commercial Club in July 1955.
