About Petersburg

Petersburg is a village of 332 people (2020) in northern Boone County, at about 1,896 feet on NE 14, which runs through town as Front Street. NE 32 begins here and runs east on Leona Avenue. Elgin is about 9 miles north and Albion about 12 miles south-southeast. Petersburg has a village office, a park with a campground and the Logan Fontenelle markers, and churches; its students attend Boone Central Schools in Albion. Every late August the Rae Valley Heritage Association holds its antique tractor show and plowing bee at Charlie's Park just west of town. Petersburg is on Central Time.

History

Petersburg was platted in 1887 when a Chicago & North Western branch reached the site, and named for John Peters, who owned the townsite; the post office opened on September 20, 1887. Raeville, three miles north, had voted against a station, so the depot and Raeville's post office went to Petersburg. In 1896 sixty Catholic families bought the former Methodist church as St. John the Baptist. The village jail is on the National Register. The population peaked at 657 in 1940. The railroad has since been abandoned. Petersburg's school district joined Boone Central on June 15, 2000. The Omaha leader Logan Fontenelle was killed by a Sioux war party on a buffalo hunt near here in July 1855.
