History

Coleridge was platted in 1883 when the Omaha Road extension reached the site, two miles west of the older settlement of Norris. The village calls its depot the first in the county, where materials were stockpiled for the line to Hartington. The Lawnridge post office was renamed Coleridge on September 10, 1883, for Lord John Coleridge, Lord Chief Justice of England, who was then visiting the United States, and the Norris post office moved here on October 27, 1887.

The population peaked at 674 in 1920. Norris School District 30 merged with Coleridge in 1959, and the current school building opened in 1961; it is now the middle school for Laurel-Concord-Coleridge. A veterans memorial plaza was dedicated in 2016. Notable people from Coleridge include George Stone, the 1906 American League batting champion, and illustrator Vernon Grant.
