About Wayne County

Wayne County lies in the rolling farm country of northeast Nebraska. Wayne, the county seat and only city, is home to Wayne State College. The villages are Winside, Hoskins, Carroll and Sholes; Altona is unincorporated, and the south side of Wakefield is in the county. Wayne County borders Cedar County on the north, Dixon on the northeast, Thurston on the east, Cuming on the southeast, Stanton on the south, Madison on the southwest and Pierce on the west.

Settlers arrived in 1868–69, and the county was organized in 1870, with LaPorte, southeast of present-day Wayne, as its first seat. When the railroad came west from Wakefield in 1881 it bypassed LaPorte and laid out Wayne, and the seat moved there in March 1883; LaPorte, once home to nearly 300 people, disappeared. The present courthouse, a Richardsonian Romanesque building begun in 1899, is on the National Register. The county’s other vanished places include Taffe, Logan City, Apex, Northside and Spring Branch.

Travel Corridors

NE 15 runs north–south through Wayne, from Pilger toward Laurel and US 20. Highway 15 Corridor → NE 35 crosses the county from Norfolk through Hoskins, Winside and Wayne to Wakefield. NE 98 runs west from NE 35 near Wayne toward Pierce, and NE 57 runs north from NE 98 through Carroll. US 20 passes just north of the county and US 275 just south.

Things to See

The county’s five National Register listings are all in Wayne: the Wayne County Courthouse, the Wightman House (home of the Wayne County Historical Museum), the Municipal Auditorium and post office of 1935, and the Wayne Commercial Historic District. Wayne State College, founded in 1891, brings concerts, athletics and other events to town.

Parks and Outdoors

Wayne County has no state park or recreation area, but it has two state wildlife management areas: Thompson-Barnes (160 acres, north of Wayne) and Sioux Strip (25 acres, near Randolph and Sholes). Wayne has camping at Victor Park and Lions RV Park, and an 18-hole country club. Three wind farms — Haystack, Plum Creek and Sholes — generate about 645 megawatts.

Outdoors: camping, hunting and fishing

Wayne County has no state park or state recreation area. Public hunting is on two state wildlife management areas — Thompson-Barnes WMA (160 acres; 4 miles north, 1 west and ½ north of Wayne; dove, pheasant, quail and rabbit) and Sioux Strip WMA (25 acres in three tracts beginning 2 miles southeast of Randolph) — and on Open Fields and Waters walk-in tracts, which change each year; check the current Public Access Atlas.

Camping: Victor Park, on South Main Street (NE 15) at the south edge of Wayne, is a city campground at $15 a night with a five-night limit; pay at the deposit box. Lions RV Park, run by the Lions Club on NE 35 at the east edge of town by the airport, is also $15 a night, with about four electric sites and a dump station.
