Located in northeast Nebraska, Wayne County was organized in 1870 and takes its name from Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne. Its county seat, the city of Wayne, is home to Wayne State College, which has anchored the community’s educational and cultural life since 1891. Beyond the college town, the county’s rolling hills and rich farmland support a strong agricultural economy that grew alongside the railroad’s arrival in the 1880s.

History

Wayne County was organized in the fall of 1870 by proclamation of Nebraska Governor David Butler. Its original county seat was LaPorte, a townsite that once held nearly 300 residents before vanishing after the railroad chose a route through Wayne instead, and the seat moved there in 1881. The county courthouse burned on July 4, 1884; its replacement, a red-brick Norman Chateau–style building completed in 1899 for about $32,000, still serves as the courthouse today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
