About Thomas County

Thomas County lies in the central Sandhills, crossed east–west by the spring-fed Middle Loup River and in the south by the Dismal. It holds most of the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest, the largest human-planted forest in the United States. Its towns are Thedford, the county seat, and Halsey, both villages, and the unincorporated railroad points Seneca, Norway and Natick. It borders Cherry County on the north, Blaine on the east, Logan on the south, McPherson on the southwest and Hooker on the west.

The first homestead claim was filed in 1880. The Burlington built up the Middle Loup valley in 1887–88 with stations at Halsey, Natick, Thedford, Norway and Seneca, and the Legislature fixed the county’s boundaries on March 31, 1887; Thedford has been the seat since organization. Kinkaid Act homesteaders after 1904 took the county to its peak of 1,773 people in 1920, but sand and scarce water beat most farms, and by 1940 fourteen ranches ran more than 3,480 acres each, the largest 16,000. In 1902 Theodore Roosevelt set aside the forest reserve that Charles E. Bessey had proposed, and planting began in 1903. On October 2, 2022, the Bovee Fire burned about 19,000 acres, roughly 5,000 of them in the forest, destroyed the State 4-H Camp and damaged the Scott Lookout Tower; Purdum assistant fire chief Mike Moody, 59, died during the fight.

Nebraska National Forest and Outdoors

The Bessey Ranger District, about 90,000 acres, has its office at 40637 River Loop, Halsey, (308) 533-2257. The Bessey Recreation Complex beside the Middle Loup, a mile west of Halsey on Spur 86B, is open all year with 48 sites: $15 without electricity, $20 with, $125 for the group site; day use $5 per vehicle or $20 a year, cash or check. Showers and flush toilets run mid-May to mid-October, and about half the sites can be reserved at Recreation.gov in that season. A small fish pond with an ADA pier is stocked with trout, catfish, bluegill and bass. Natick Campground (17 sites, 20 horse corrals) and Whitetail Campground on the Dismal River (10 sites, 9 corrals) are primitive, $15 a night by fee envelope, with no drinking water. About 36 miles of OHV trail (vehicles 64 inches wide or less) start at the complex, the Dismal and Powerline trailheads and Whitetail. Prairie-grouse viewing blinds are set up each spring. The Scott Lookout Tower (1944), damaged in the Bovee Fire, is closed for renovation but can be seen from the ground. Stage 1 fire restrictions have been in effect on the forest since July 18, 2026; check before building a campfire.

In Thedford, the city park campground is free (donations welcome) with a few 30-amp sites, Sandhill River Trips runs tubes, tanks and kayaks on the Middle Loup, and the nine-hole Thedford Golf Course is a mile south on US 83.

The Thomas County Fair is held at the fairgrounds near the US 83/NE 2 junction in Thedford in late July; in 2026 it included bull fighting at the grandstand on July 25.
