About Bodarc

Bodarc was a settlement on Hat Creek in central Sioux County, about 9 miles northeast of Harrison. The Bodarc Church and Cemetery remain beside Hat Creek Road. The map marks the cemetery.

History

John W. Hunter and C. F. Slingerland kept a store here in the 1880s. Hunter asked for a post office named Oressa, for his daughter, while a Texas town asked for "Bodarc"; Washington crossed the requests, and Nebraska got Bodarc. The Bodarc Record, begun in the autumn of 1886, was the county's first newspaper, and Bodarc was Harrison's main rival in the county-seat election of January 1887. Bodarc School (District 6) stood about 13 miles northeast of Harrison. To reach the church and cemetery from Harrison, go 3 miles east on US 20, 8 miles north on Pants Butte Road, then 1 mile east on Hat Creek Road.
