About Lyman

Lyman is a village of 259 (2020) in the far west of Scotts Bluff County, at 4,049 feet, less than a mile from the Wyoming line and south of Horse Creek. NE 92 runs through the village on N Street, and Holloway Road leads north to Henry. Lyman has a library and a post office but no school of its own, and is on Mountain Time.

History

Lyman grew up when the Union Pacific extended its south-side branch through Gering to the Wyoming line, and it incorporated in 1922. It was named for the bankers Charles and W. H. Lyman. Great Western Sugar opened a factory here in 1927, and Volga German families, among them the Beckers, Streckers and Welsches, came to raise sugar beets. The population peaked at 672 in 1940.
