Former post office and store · Rock County · post office 1886 or 1892 to 1953
About Duff
Duff is the site of a former store and post office in southern Rock County, about 4 miles west-northwest of Rose and 27 miles south of Bassett, in Sandhills ranch country. The Duff Cemetery keeps the name; little else is known to remain.
History
The name is thought to come from an early settler. Sources disagree on when the post office opened: one county history gives April 14, 1886, with a break from 1901 to 1903, while the postal-history record gives 1892. It closed on June 30, 1953, and its mail went to Rose. The Duff store, one of the oldest in the county, started about 1886, burned in 1922 and was rebuilt with a dance hall and an attached home; it sold groceries, dry goods, hardware and drugs, bought cream and eggs, and handled banking through the Bank of Long Pine until the bank closures of the 1930s. The Duff church closed in 1962 and merged with Rose Hill.
