About Polk County

Polk County is farm country in east-central Nebraska, rising from the Platte River valley along its northern edge to rolling upland that drains east toward Butler County. Osceola, the county seat, is near the middle; Stromsburg, the largest town, is the Swede Capital of Nebraska; Shelby and Polk are villages; and Durant and Swedehome are unincorporated communities. The county borders Platte County on the north, Butler on the east, Seward at the southeast corner, York on the south, Hamilton on the southwest and Merrick on the west.

The territorial legislature drew the county’s boundaries on January 26, 1856, but the land stayed attached to Butler County until a special election organized Polk County on August 6, 1870. Osceola won the county seat by 14 votes in October 1871; the first courthouse burned on January 1, 1881, and the present one was built in 1921–22. The Omaha & Republican Valley Railroad (Union Pacific) reached Osceola, Stromsburg and Shelby in 1879, the Kansas City & Omaha reached Stromsburg from Fairfield in 1887, and a Union Pacific branch toward Central City founded Polk in 1906. Swedish settlers made Stromsburg; German families settled around Shelby. The population peaked at 10,817 in 1890 and was about 5,270 in 2025.
