Nelson is the county seat of Nuckolls County, named for Horatio Nelson Wheeler, the original townsite's owner. Founded in the early 1870s, it narrowly retained its county-seat status over a rival bid from Superior in an 1889 election. The town has weathered three devastating fires and a cyclone over its history, rebuilding each time. Today Nelson is home to about 456 residents and anchors the county's civic life, with the Nuckolls County Courthouse and the Nelson Cemetery Walk both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Retired MLB outfielder Russ Snyder, a 1966 World Series participant with the Baltimore Orioles, has made his home in Nelson since retiring from baseball.
