Town Overview

Raymond is a village of 159 on 0.13 square miles about 12 miles north-northwest of Lincoln. It was platted in 1880 when the railroad arrived and named for I. M. Raymond, a railroad official; it incorporated in 1892. Population has eased gently downward — 186 in 2000, 167 in 2010, 159 in 2020.

The village's modern character was set in 1970, when Branched Oak Dam was completed just to the southwest. The reservoir behind it both took the flood risk out of the local creeks and created what is now the largest recreation area in eastern Nebraska on Raymond's doorstep.

Lancaster County is Nebraska's second most populous county, with 322,608 residents in 2020 across 846 square miles, and its seat is Lincoln, the state capital. It borders Saunders County to the north, Cass County to the northeast, Otoe County and Johnson County to the southeast, Gage County to the south, Saline County to the southwest, and Seward County and Butler County to the northwest.

Nearest towns. Malcolm is about 6 miles southwest and Davey about 6 miles east. Waverly lies about 14 miles east-southeast. Valparaiso and Ceresco, both in the same school district, are just north over the Saunders County line. Downtown Lincoln is about 12 miles south-southeast. Branched Oak State Recreation Area — The dam was finished in 1970 and the reservoir behind it is the largest of the Salt Valley lakes and the biggest recreation area in eastern Nebraska. Boating, fishing, camping and swimming draw people out from Lincoln all summer, and Raymond is one of the closest villages to it.

Education & Health

Schools. Raymond is part of Raymond Central Public Schools, a Class C-2 district formed by consolidation in 1967 and covering about 169 square miles north of Lincoln. It serves Raymond, Davey, Ceresco, Valparaiso and Agnew, with a kindergarten-to-fifth-grade building in Ceresco, a kindergarten-to-sixth-grade building in Valparaiso, and the seventh-to-twelfth-grade school near Agnew Road.

Health care. There is no hospital in Raymond. Lincoln, about 12 miles south-southeast, has the region's full range of hospital care.

Highway Access

Raymond lies on the county road network north-northwest of Lincoln, a few miles west of the Nebraska Highway 79 corridor that runs north out of the city toward Valparaiso and Wahoo.

The nearest interstate is Interstate 80, which passes south of the village on the north side of Lincoln. Lincoln Airport is the nearest commercial airport, about 12 miles south.
