Crofton is a city of 756 on NE 12 in northeastern Knox County, where NE 121 heads north to Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area and Gavins Point Dam, about 10 miles away. It has an Avera clinic, public and Catholic schools, the Historic Argo Hotel, a golf course, and lake campgrounds and cabins nearby.
History
Crofton was platted in 1892 and named for Crofton Court in England, the former estate of a railroad promoter. St. Rose of Lima parish was founded in 1906; its present church, built in 1952–53, and school are on the National Register of Historic Places, as is the Argo Hotel.
Gavins Point Dam was built across the Missouri about 10 miles north of town from 1952 to 1957, creating Lewis and Clark Lake, and Crofton grew with the lake trade. Its population peaked at 948 in 1980.
