History
Wolbach was founded in 1887 when the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad built its Palmer–Burwell branch through, and was named for S. N. Wolbach of Grand Island, one of the original owners of the town site. Wolbach had opened a store in Grand Island in 1874 that grew into a department store, served as president of the First National Bank there, and represented Hall County in both houses of the Legislature. In 1890 the town shipped mostly livestock and had a grain elevator, a lumber and coal yard, a hotel, a livery and a hardware store. It reached 589 people in 1920. Wolbach once had its own school district; its students now attend Central Valley Public Schools. The village lies wholly in Greeley County, though the Wolbach community's farm country reaches south into Howard County.
