Beatrice, the Gage County seat, was settled in 1857 by members of the "Nebraska Association," a group of stranded steamboat passengers who organized to found a town at a Big Blue River crossing on the DeRoin Trail. The town is named for Julia Beatrice Kinney, the 17-year-old daughter of one of its founders. Daniel Freeman filed the first-ever claim under the 1862 Homestead Act just outside Beatrice on January 1, 1863, a site now preserved as Homestead National Historical Park. Beatrice Foods Company, later a major national dairy conglomerate, was founded here in 1894.
