Arapahoe was surveyed in July 1871 by the Arapahoe Town Company and settled in the Republican River valley, taking its name from the Arapaho tribe who had occupied the region. It briefly served as Furnas County's first, contested county seat before losing the designation to Beaver City. The town is home to the Furnas County Museum and hosts "Prairie Pioneer Days" every July.

Furnas County borders Phelps County (northeast), Harlan County (east), Gosper County (north), Frontier County (northwest), and Red Willow County (west); Norton and Decatur Counties, Kansas, border to the south and southwest.
