About Ohiowa

Ohiowa is a village of 122 people (2020) in southeastern Fillmore County, at 1,588 feet about 11 miles southeast of Geneva. Its 1922 brick school is on the National Register, Lazy Horse Vineyard & Brewing is just outside town, and Lone Star Recreation Area, a 75-acre lake with camping, is about 3½ miles east. Ohiowa is on Central Time.

History

The townsite was surveyed in May 1886 and the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad arrived that August; Mrs. Austin Adams suggested the name, for the settlers from Ohio and Iowa. Ohiowa incorporated on February 19, 1887. The town hall and jail date from 1902, and the brick school of 1922 replaced an 1888 frame schoolhouse. St. John’s Lutheran Church, organized in 1880, moved into town in 1921. Lower Sorbian poet Mato Kosyk was pastor at Ohiowa from 1899 to 1907. The population peaked at 433 in 1920.
