History
The Oregon Trail was the primary overland route to the Pacific Northwest from 1841 to 1869, when the transcontinental railroad ended mass wagon migration. Nebraska's Platte River valley provided a natural highway — wide, shallow, and flanked by grass — that guided emigrants from the Missouri River to the Rockies. Nebraska's dramatic landmarks (Chimney Rock, Scotts Bluff) served as navigational waypoints and emotional milestones for westward travelers.
