About Snyder

Snyder is a village of 254 on NE 91 in northern Dodge County, where NE 79 begins. It has more factory jobs than residents: Smeal Fire Apparatus builds aerial ladder trucks here, alongside Danko Emergency Equipment, Hunke Manufacturing and Wonder Meats. The village also has St. Leo Catholic Church and the Snyder Public Library.

History

Conrad Schneider built a grist mill here in 1880, and the Western Town Lot Company platted the village on August 5, 1886, as the railroad's Albion branch came through; the name is an anglicized Schneider. John Bolte opened the first store in 1883, the State Bank of Snyder opened in 1892, and the village incorporated in 1890. The population peaked at 458 in 1930. Snyder's high school closed in 1987, when it joined Scribner.

Smeal built its first aerial truck, a 52-foot ladder, for the Snyder rural fire district in the 1960s; now part of REV Group's Spartan, it employs more than 250 people and finished its 1,000th 105-foot aerial in 2024. Danko marked 50 years in 2024, and Wonder Meats opened in 2023. Oswald Hoffmann, speaker of The Lutheran Hour from 1955 to 1988, was born in Snyder in 1913.
