The Willa Cather Childhood Home, 241 N. Cedar St. at Third Avenue in Red Cloud, was built about 1878–79. The Cather family rented it from 1884, and Willa lived here from about age 10 until she left for the University of Nebraska in 1890; her attic bedroom under the eaves still has its original wallpaper. The house appears in "Old Mrs. Harris," "The Best Years" and The Song of the Lark. The Willa Cather Foundation bought it in 1960; it was listed on the National Register in 1969, named a National Historic Landmark in 1971, and restored and reopened in December 2023. Guided tours start at the National Willa Cather Center, 413 N. Webster St.
