Spring Valley Park, on US 20 southwest of Newport near Cowboy Trail mile 119.9, was set up about 1938 by Vic and Maude Thompson and is called Nebraska’s first roadside rest area; History Nebraska marker 106 tells its story. Recent trail users report that the water may be off and the restrooms locked; check with the Village of Newport before planning to camp.
