This History Nebraska marker on US 83 north of McCook tells of the McCook Army Air Base, activated on April 1, 1943, and closed on December 31, 1945. About 15,000 servicemen and 500 civilians passed through its final training of B-17, B-24 and B-29 bomber crews. A few buildings remain, including hangars owned by the McCook Army Air Base Historical Society, and the base's Norden bombsight vault is on the National Register. The grounds are private; there are no posted tour hours.
