This History Nebraska marker, 4 miles east and 4 miles north of Hayes Center, recalls the buffalo hunt staged for Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich, son of Tsar Alexander II, on January 13–15, 1872. General Philip Sheridan arranged it; Generals George Custer and George Forsyth were in the party, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody was guide and chief hunter, and Spotted Tail’s Brulé Sioux camp gave dances and shooting exhibitions. Camp Alexis stood about a mile north of the marker on Red Willow Creek. The duke turned 22 during the hunt.
