Description

Eiker Park, at US 138 and First Street on the west side of Big Springs, has three historical markers. The best known tells how Sam Bass and five companions robbed Union Pacific Express No. 4 at the Big Springs station on September 18, 1877, taking about $60,000 in new $20 gold pieces, and calls it "the first and greatest robbery of a Union Pacific train." The others describe the 1885 Phelps Hotel and the 1886 Waterman Sod House north of town.
