Champion Mill, at 2nd and Mill Streets in Champion, is probably the oldest functioning water-powered mill in Nebraska. Thomas Scott received land and water rights in return for building a mill at a natural falls on Frenchman Creek; work began in the fall of 1886, and the mill ground flour and feed from 1889. It burned in December 1891 and was rebuilt in 1892, ground only feed after 1945 and closed in 1968. Nebraska Game and Parks bought it in 1969 and ran it as a state historical park; the mill, headrace and dam were listed on the National Register as a historic district in 1988, and Chase County has owned and run the park since July 1, 2013.
The mill is open Saturday and Sunday 1–4 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, and at other times by appointment. The 11-acre park, mostly the mill pond (Champion Lake), is open all year, with 6 electric campsites at $12 a night and free tent camping; its shallow water is good for wading and for children learning to fish. A History Nebraska marker stands on Mill Street.
