Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area is just over the line in Dawes County, about 9 miles north of Hemingford at Table Center Road and River Road. Its 2,212 acres include a 1,600-acre lake on the Niobrara behind a dam built in 1941–46 for the Mirage Flats irrigation project. There are 86 campsites (60 with 30/50-amp electric, 26 basic, 2 ADA), a shower house and dump station, two boat ramps and docks, shelters and a fish-cleaning station; fish include northern pike, walleye, bass, catfish, perch and bluegill.
