Description

The Old Rock Jail stands on the old courthouse square in Bloomington, county seat from 1874 to 1920. It was built in the mid-1890s of green river rock quarried about five miles south, across the Republican, and held the sheriff's office and three cells; its first prisoners were held after an 1899 murder. The exterior is little changed. Also on the square are a 155 mm German howitzer captured in 1918, an 1870s horse trough and the old high school bell. View from outside.
