History Nebraska marker No. 416 stands in a pull-out on the north side of NE 2 just east of County Road 57, about 3 miles east-southeast of Alliance. It tells of the Alliance Army Air Field, chosen in spring 1942: about 5,000 workers built four 9,000-foot runways by July 1942, and by September 1943 some 12,500 people on 31,489 acres trained C-47 and glider crews and airborne troops, including the 507th Parachute Infantry. The base was declared surplus in December 1945 and is now the Alliance Municipal Airport.
