History
The Lincoln Land Company platted the town on May 10, 1886, as the Burlington’s Grand Island & Wyoming Central built west; the first train arrived on August 26, and the post office opened on November 9 with R. P. McKnight as postmaster. The town was first called Janesville and was renamed Berwyn that December, probably for a Burlington surveyor. Early Berwyn had a grocery, a general store and café, a lumberyard, an elevator, a blacksmith and a hardware store, and the Berwyn State Bank opened in 1914. The village counted 205 people in 1920.
