About Sunol

Sunol is an unincorporated community and census-designated place of 57 (2020) in the Lodgepole Creek valley of Cheyenne County, at 3,924 feet on US 30 and US 385 and the Union Pacific, about 12 miles east of Sidney and 5½ miles west of Lodgepole. I-80 exit 69 is 3 miles south by Link 17E.

History

Sunol began as a Union Pacific station in Lodge Pole precinct. It was platted in 1909 and had a post office from 1910 to 1973; the origin of the name is not recorded. In 1920 it had a bank, stores and a garage and shipped 106 carloads of wheat. Two rural cemeteries, the Czech Slovensky and Swankee cemeteries, are about 6 miles south.
