About Point of Rocks
Point of Rocks is not a town but a natural landmark, a limestone point on the Lodgepole Creek valley in western Cheyenne County, a few miles east of Potter near US 30 and I-80. The state historical marker for the county places it "some fifteen miles west of Sidney," and a U.S. Geological Survey map quadrangle carries its name.
History
The Lodgepole Creek valley was the route of the 1859 cutoff of the trail to Denver and California, the Pony Express in 1860–61, the Overland Stage and the transcontinental telegraph in 1861, and the Union Pacific in 1867, and Point of Rocks was a landmark along the way. Later, ranchers quarried limestone here: Daniel and Sarah Herboldsheimer used it for the stone barn, corral and house of their ranch about 5 miles north, built between 1898 and about 1905 and now on the National Register. The Point of Rocks Motel on US 30 east of Potter takes its name from the landmark.
