History

The settlement on the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley Railroad, later the Chicago & North Western, was first called Boulware and then Georgia, and it was incorporated as Georgia in 1893. Because the post office objected to the name, it became Kilgore in 1904, for a pioneer family. In its heyday from the 1900s to the late 1920s Kilgore had general stores, two hotels, a lumberyard, a grain elevator, car dealers and a depot with two passenger trains each way daily; a brick K–12 school went up in 1929, when the population was over 250. The Baptist church was organized in 1909. The population peaked at 274 in 1920, and the railroad was abandoned in the 1990s.
