About South Yankton
South Yankton is an unincorporated place at the Nebraska end of the US 81 bridges over the Missouri River, across from Yankton, South Dakota, where NE 121 begins. It has no population figure of its own. The Meridian Bridge trail and Aten are nearby.
History
The low ground here was Green Island, also platted as Strahmburg by Swiss immigrant Sabie Strahm in 1872. An ice-jam flood on March 30–31, 1881, destroyed the town, and its people moved west to higher ground at Aten.
The double-deck Meridian Highway Bridge, a vertical-lift truss about 3,000 feet long, was dedicated on October 11, 1924, and carried US 81 as a toll bridge until 1953. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The four-lane Discovery Bridge opened beside it on October 11, 2008, and the Meridian Bridge reopened to walkers and cyclists in November 2011.
