History

Rising City was established in 1878 when the Omaha & Republican Valley Railroad (Union Pacific) built across the county, on land given by Samuel W. Rising and his son Albert W. Rising, 40 acres each, for whom it is named. Its brick Opera Block, finished in 1892, burned in 1923. The village reached its peak of 610 people in 1890. CliffsNotes founder Clifton Hillegass was born here in 1918, and so was Walter Judd (1898), the medical missionary to China who represented Minnesota in Congress from 1943 to 1963.
