About Raeville
Raeville is an unincorporated community of 18 people (2020) in northern Boone County, about 2 miles east of NE 14 and 3 miles north-northeast of Petersburg, at about 1,939 feet. Today it is the St. Bonaventure Church Complex and a few farms; the church's twin towers, about 100 feet tall, can be seen for miles. Raeville is on Central Time.
History
Brothers Thomas and James Rae from Canada settled the valley in the early 1870s, and it became Rae Valley and then Raeville. German-speaking Catholic families followed from 1875. The first Mass was said in the Bremer sod house in 1881, and the Rev. Nicholas Horn built the first church in 1882; Franciscans served the parish from 1884 to 1892. About 1886 Raeville voted against a railroad station, so the depot and post office went to Petersburg; the Rev. John B. Frigge brought a station in 1917, followed by a bank, store, elevator and a reopened post office (1918–1982). The brick school went up in 1910, and the Romanesque Revival church, designed by Jacob M. Nachtigall of Omaha with 21 Emil Frei stained-glass windows, was dedicated on July 14, 1919. The church, school, rectory and cemetery were listed on the National Register in 1982.
