About Loretto
Loretto is an unincorporated community of 50 people (2020) on NE 14 along Beaver Creek in north-central Boone County, at about 1,828 feet, about 7 miles northwest of Albion and 6 miles south of Petersburg. It has no businesses, school or post office today; mail comes through Albion. Loretto is on Central Time.
History
The settlement was first called Loran, for Albion founder Loran Clark, and was renamed Loretto, for Loreto in Italy, because another Nebraska post office had a similar name; the post office opened on July 21, 1888, and closed in 1971. Jacob R. McCartney bought the first town lots, built the first house, dug the first well, opened a general store and served as postmaster and justice of the peace. The Loretto State Bank opened in 1909, and in the 1920s the town had a cheese factory, several general stores, a butcher shop and a hotel.
