About Benedict

Benedict is a village of 203 people (2020) in northern York County, at 1,680 feet just off US 81 about 10 miles north of York and 7½ miles south of Stromsburg. Since 2002 its children have attended Cross County Community Schools, whose PK–12 building stands where US 81 meets NE 66 in Polk County. The W. S. Jeffery Farmstead west of town is on the National Register. Benedict is on Central Time.

History

Benedict was platted in 1886–87 on the Kansas City & Omaha Railroad, on land from the E. B. Crownover and Henry Harrington farms, and named for E. C. Benedict, president of the railroad; building began in January 1887, and the first train arrived on June 27, 1887. The village incorporated in 1890 and peaked at 336 people in 1910. The Jeffery farm was established in 1878; its barn dates from 1879–80 and the Queen Anne farmhouse from 1900–02.
